Design Daze: January Events 2026

Design Daze Out: January Events 2026

January has a habit of arriving with instructions to reset, refocus and accelerate. But in the depth of winter, that pressure can feel oddly out of step. Creativity doesn’t always respond well to urgency. Sometimes it needs stillness. Time to look again. To absorb rather than act. To let ideas surface without being summoned.

This month’s Design Daze is about resisting the January rush. Choosing appreciation over acceleration. Letting art, design, and culture gently stretch the senses back into shape, because sometimes the most productive thing you can do at the start of a year is simply to look, listen, and let yourself be inspired.

Winter Lights Festival

Light hits different in January. Scarcer. More deliberate. Returning to Canary Wharf for its 10th edition, the Winter Lights Festival brings together large-scale installations by acclaimed artists from around the world.

This year’s theme, DREAMSCAPE, leads visitors through surreal, ethereal and deeply human moments. It’s an unhurried journey. One that lingers, offering a sense of connection and inspiration to carry quietly into the year ahead.

Canary Wharf, 20-31 January 2026

Nan Goldin: The Ballad of Sexual Dependency

Goldin’s photographs feel especially resonant at this time of year. Intimate, tender, and unfiltered, the work invites a slower kind of engagement. She describes it as “the diary I let people read.” This free exhibit asks for empathy rather than analysis.

At Gagosian Davies Street, 13 January–21 March

London Art Fair

20–25 January
at Business Design Centre
Take a measured return to contemporary art at this year's London Art Fair. A space to wander, linger and recalibrate the eye, bringing together a considered mix of established and emerging voices.

If you're able to make it, be sure to check out Platform, curated by acclaimed art historian Dr Ferren Gipson. Exploring the theme The Unexpected, the exhibition brings together artists who challenge conventions of material, process and form. It’s an exhibition rooted in curiosity and craft, celebrating surprise, innovation and meaning-making - very much in tune with Hunt Hanson’s sensibility.

London Short Film Festival

London Short Film Festival invites immersion in short-form cinema that rewards attention rather than urgency.

This year’s programme, Cinema Remembers What We Forget, explores memory and identity through intimate, boundary-pushing work. From raw confessionals to poetic storytelling, these are films that linger, offering reflection, connection, and a moment to pause.
